Bio

Hal Kirkland is an internationally awarded VR, Interactive, and Traditional Film Director who searches for meaningful human stories amidst mind-bending technological feats. As a Director and Creative Director he’s worked alongside the world’s leading brands (Coca-Cola, Vice, Google, MTV), agencies (R/GA, W+K, BBH, 180), bands (OneRepublic, Led Zeppelin, Snoop Dogg), production companies (Here Be Dragons, Prettybird, Stinkdigital, Jam3) and cultural institutions (Guggenheim New York, MoMA New York).

His recent music video for OneRepublic’s song ‘Kids’, choreographed over 100 people in a single take, 4-minute long, VR music video in Mexico City. His music video for Led Zeppelin invited fans to literally step behind the facade of their legendary Physical Graffiti album and explore 17 music videos playing simultaneously and in perfect sync with one another. His music video for little-known indie band ‘Sour’ choreographed 80 fans from around the world via webcams to create a mesmerizing visual style that was replicated in countless commercials and emulated in other music videos. It would eventually tour in Museums of the Moving Image in New York, Sao Paulo, and Melbourne. This piece was also fortunate enough to become one of the most awarded music videos of 2010-11.

As a Media Artist and Founder of Audio Tour Hack, he’s reimagined the meaning of entire exhibitions and created alternative audio tours that open the doors of leading cultural institutions to wider audiences (MoMA Unadulterated, Artobots Guggenheim).

His work has attracted over 60 International awards including: UK Music Video Awards, D&AD Pencils, Gold Clios, Cannes Gold Lions, Gold One Show Pencils, Grand Prix in 10 festivals, 25 Best Music Video Awards, to name a few. His work has been showcased on CNN, CBS, Rollingstone, New York Times, TechCrunch, Contagious, Creativity, PSFK, and more. He’s shared his tales at such festivals as SXSW, Museum Next, and Creative Week NYC and Disney Animation Studios.

He’s currently working with Here Be Dragons in Los Angeles as both Director and Creative Director to help push the new frontier of VR even further—a medium he believes is the perfect merge between filmmaking, writing, and technical expression.
